Today’d FP Nice Price or Crack Pipe is a 2003 XKR for $15k. With current voting at 50/50, this brings my hope for my current project, my 2004 Jaguar S-Type R.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Why?
The S-type has the s ame engine, (IMO) better styling* , is more practical , weighs the same , and is a lot cheaper .
*I think the XKR is very pretty from some angles and just awful from others. I think the S-Type is very pretty from some angles and just OK from others. Also the S-Type has A LOT less wood on the interior and I find that endearing.
I paid just $4,800 for my admittedly sickly S-Type and have pumped about another $1,500 in upgrades and maintenance in it.
Also I didn’t cheap out on tires.
So I choose to believe that I could actually break even on my S-Type when it comes time to sell!
...
Right?

How long do you plan to hold onto this for?

(IMO) better styling
I’m glad you like it! Personally I find the XKR massively more attr active.

Original plan was about a year and I have no reason to think I’m going to deviate from that. I want to fix it up, do some fun adventures in it, and then move on to the next project. It with the other cars calling for attention it might stick around a little longer.

Interesting! The rear overhang bothers me and there is way too much wood in the interior. Of the three (for me) it was a toss up between the XJR and the S-type. I have mild regrets about not going full XJR but... here we are haha.

Ah, I didn’t know if you had planed to keep it long term or something.

Haha no... I already have four “long term” cars in the garage. Gotta leave space for at least one project! I do really like the Jag and I’m 100% sure I’ll miss it when it is gone.

Such is the fickleness of personal taste!

According to the highly controversial BaT Barometer™ which I’ve just now made up, I would not feel as hopeful. Many XKRs have been listed compared to only three S-type Rs, the last one which sold $7,500 with only 48k miles....
But hey DREAM BIG!!!

I also agree with you about the wood. I like wood, I love Jaguar wood interiors, but the dash in that XKR is ugly

Less wood in a Jaguar is better? Blasphemy!

Yeah that sounds right.

Damn you for reminding me that the XJ6 exists. Now I want one again and will have to somehow forget they exist again. Same with the XJ40. Stop being cheap, good looking and being appealing to me and stop appearing in my autotrader search bar...
Ps nice J aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaguar

Haha yeah I really love my 1985 Series 3 XJ6, both to look at and to drive. I’ve got it pretty well sorted mechanically now. More rust than I’d like but it looks great from 20 feet.

Damn it, I promised myself a break from British stuff (I’ve had 3 Land Rovers in a row, actually not had anything happen which has put me off, I just want to diversify my car purchases) and was aiming at an Alfa Romeo 159 or BMW E34 525i, but the XJ6 is just such a good looking machine, as is the XJ40 and Jaguars are close to heart to me too, as my grandma worked at the browns lane site and I currently live about ten doors up and across from where yours was built...
damn emotionally driven purchases ...

Well I’m thoroughly addicted to British cars— garage contains a TR6, the Jag and a 2013 MINI. But I’ve been experimenting with Swedes lately, wife’s DD is now a 2016 V60 and recently picked up this number (technically a Finn:)

Damn, your garage is nice. In my garage there’s just a 2003 Freelander 1, my dependable and brilliantly capable daily, a 1994 Range Rover Classic 300tdi I’m selling because it’s not as good a daily as the Freelander nor do I actually use it offroad as much and a 1993 Range Rover Classic V8 that I bought because I’m an idiot and like putting myself in awkward financial positions, but also for the V8 noises. The plan is to keep it and manual swap it, clean it up and then just ragging the absolute shit out of because it’s a 3.9 V8 with a straight pipe and I like childish exhaust notes or cleaning it up and selling it for room and more extra money. Dunno yet...
Also like Saab 9-3s my dad had one of those. Sort of want a Viggen one because it’s named after a jet fighter... also fast

Nice collection yourself, I kinda secretly like old rangies though I’ve never even ridden in one.
As it happens it’s a 1998 900 - the last year of the 900 name; as I understand when they rolled out the 9-3 name in 1999 the car was hardly changed at all. So it’s a New Gen 900 or an Old Gen 9-3 :eyeroll.
Despite listening carefully for suspension noises when I test drove it, while changing the oil the day after I got it I found the ball joints were quite worn. At least replacing the two lower control arms also gets you all the bushings too.
